Hand osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of disability in older people. Although often underemphasized, it may affect quality of life and imposes a considerable burden on the health system. This study evaluated the epidemiology of hand OA in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Depression has been linked to inferior clinical outcomes among upper extremity patients. It often is challenging to distinguish the symptoms of depression, symptoms of injury, and the interaction between these 2 entities after a patient has been injured. We aimed to study the differences in clinical outcomes after surgical fixation of distal radius fractures between patients with and without a documented history and treatment for depression.

The appearance of the hand is relevant to individual activity and participation. Improving appearance is often one of the essential goals of hand surgery. The aim of this study was to describe and validate an instrument for quantitatively assessing hand appearance in congenital upper limb differences (CULD).

Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) of the upper extremity is characterized by rapid progression, local tissue necrosis, systemic toxicity, and a high mortality rate. The negative consequences of debridement are balanced against preservation of life and limb. The primary objective of this study was to identify predictors of mortality in upper extremity NSTI. Secondary objectives were to identify predictors of amputation, final defect size, length of stay, and readmission within 30 days.

Adoption status has been investigated in numerous populations, identifying negative and positive effects on patient outcomes. This study compared parent-reported outcomes in adopted and nonadopted individuals with congenital upper-extremity (UE) anomalies to determine whether there was a measurable difference in parent perceptions of psychosocial health and functioning.

Hand function outcomes of primary nerve reconstruction for total brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) are confounded by nerve roots left in continuity, inclusion of secondary procedures, and no assessment of the ability to perform activities of daily living. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term hand function outcomes in a cohort of patients with a complete BPBI who had no nerve root in continuity prior to primary nerve reconstruction targeting the lower trunk.

We aimed to test the utility of screening for depressive symptoms in the hand surgical office focusing on chances of heightened depressive symptoms in patients with no history of diagnosed depression and by quantifying ongoing depressive symptoms among patients diagnosed with depression accounting for antidepressant use. The clinical importance of this study was predicated on the documented negative association between depressive symptoms and hand surgical outcomes.

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) has emerged as a treatment for, and prevention of, symptomatic neuromas and has been reported to be of benefit in the hand. Anatomical studies establishing landmarks for consistent identification of the motor entry points (MEPs) to the intrinsic muscles have not been performed. The purpose of this study was to provide details regarding the MEPs to the intrinsic muscles, determine which MEPs are identifiable dorsally, and develop recommended sensory to MEP nerve coaptations for prophylactic TMR at the time of ray amputation or for management of symptomatic neuromas.

As coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) continues to cause an immense burden on the global health care systems, it is crucial to understand the breadth of this disease process. Recent reports identified hypercoagulability in a subset of critically ill patients and extremity ischemia in an even smaller cohort. Because abnormal coagulation parameters and extremity ischemia have been shown to correlate with poor disease prognosis, understanding how to treat these patients is crucial. To better describe the identification and management of this phenomenon, we present 2 cases of critically ill patients with COVID-19 who developed fingertip ischemia while in the intensive care unit.
