A Randomized Controlled Trial of Topical Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Thumb Basal Joint Arthritis
Since the passage of the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, hand surgeons have increasingly encountered patients seeking counseling on over-the-counter, topical cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of pain. With the increasingly widespread availability of cannabidiol-derived products, more patients with hand and wrist pain are seeking evidence for use of these products. We explored current utilization practices of medical cannabis for treatment of pain in patients with a diagnosis of thumb basal joint arthritis. Proximal row carpectomy (PRC) and 4-corner arthrodesis (FCA) are common salvage procedures for the treatment of scapholunate advanced collapse and scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse. This study aimed to assess rates of reoperation and conversion to wrist fusion and to assess the factors associated with reoperation and conversion to wrist fusion for patients treated with PRC and FCA.
