Multiple nerve compression syndromes can co-occur. Little is known about this coexistence, especially about risk factors and surgical outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the prevalence of multiple nerve compression syndromes in the same arm in a surgical cohort and determine risk factors. Additionally, the surgical outcomes of concomitant treatment were studied.

Although carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can be diagnosed clinically with the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome 6 (CTS-6) evaluation tool, the relationship between disease severity and CTS-6 score has not been elucidated. The purpose of our study was to determine the correlation of the CTS-6 score and other physical examination maneuvers with the carpal tunnel severity grade by electrodiagnostic testing (EDT). We hypothesized that the CTS-6 score, Durkan test, and Semmes Weinstein Monofilament Testing (SWMT) positively correlate with EDT severity.

A 2016 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) clinical practice guideline (CPG) de-emphasized the need for electrodiagnostic studies (EDS) for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We tested the hypothesis that use of EDS decreased after the AAOS CPG.

The utility of electrodiagnostic tests (EDx) for patients with a high pretest probability of idiopathic median neuropathy at the carpal tunnel (IMNCT) based on characteristic symptoms and signs is debated. Decision-making and care strategies could be informed by a better understanding of factors associated with surgeon recommendations for electrodiagnostic testing.

In 2016, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) changed the clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, relaxing the recommendation for electrodiagnostic studies (EDS) prior to offering surgery. However, it is unknown how the updated guidelines changed the practice patterns of hand surgeons.

A growing body of evidence supports ultrasound (US) as an alternative first-line confirmatory test for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Recent studies have demonstrated a correlation of US cross-sectional area with electrodiagnostic (EDX)-determined severity; however, it is unclear whether patient sex affects the cutoff values used for determining severity. The purpose of this study was to determine if patient sex affects US graded severity when using EDX as the reference standard.

Gabapentinoids are commonly prescribed for the treatment of neuropathic pain but are not recommended for the primary treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We sought (1) to investigate the preoperative use of gabapentinoids for the treatment of CTS and (2) to determine whether preoperative exposure is associated with persistent gabapentinoid and opioid use after carpal tunnel release.

Patient knowledge of the frequency with which electrodiagnostic testing (EDx) for suspected median neuropathy at the carpal tunnel addresses nuance in the distinction between normal and abnormal neurophysiology might help them make an informed decision about whether or not to have this test. We reviewed a large set of consecutive EDx for possible carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and associated medical records to determine (1) the percentage of EDx measurements within 10% of threshold values; (2) discordance between clinician and EDx diagnosis of CTS using diagnostic performance characteristics; and (3) demographic and disease characteristics independently associated with EDx diagnosis of median neuropathy at the carpal tunnel.
