The main aim of the present study was to evaluate whether early mobilization after trapeziectomy in the first carpometacarpal joint is noninferior to a postoperative regimen comprising the use of a rigid orthosis and mobilization after 6 weeks, with regards to patient-reported activity performance and the effect of surgery in patients with first carpometacarpal osteoarthritis.

Patients undergoing surgery for trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint arthritis require preoperative counseling on the expectations of surgery. This study aims to document the objective and functional recovery over the initial 12 months following trapeziectomy and ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition (LRTI).

Biopsychosocial factors are associated with patient-reported upper extremity disability; however, their impact on postoperative outcomes remains less clear. Our purpose was to test the hypothesis that high levels of preoperative patient-reported upper extremity and psychological disability are associated with lower magnitudes of improvement following trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction tendon interposition (LRTI).

Studies have shown the effects of surgical treatments for trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis on thumb biomechanics; however, the biomechanical effects on the wrist have not been reported. This study aimed to quantify alterations in wrist muscle forces following trapeziectomy with or without ligament reconstruction and replacement.
