Local hand flaps

      Abstract

Wounds of the hand continue to be a challenge for the hand surgeon. The repair of hand wounds has evolved from the simple, such as allowing primary closure, to the complex, such as free tissue transfer. This evolution has occurred because of better understanding of the vascular supply to the skin of the hand along with the development of improved, more sophisticated surgical technique. Our review of the literature has shown numerous local hand flaps that have stood the test of time. Though lower on the reconstructive ladder, these flaps continue to aid the hand surgeon in dealing with soft tissue losses of the hand. It would be impossible to catalogue all local hand flaps in this article. Thus, we present many of the most useful and historic flaps, which we feel should be a part of every hand surgeon's armamentarium. Copyright © 2001 by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand
