The Journal of Hand Surgery was instituted 35 years ago by a small group of Hand Society visionaries who felt
that hand surgery had clearly become an established medical discipline. As such, a
specialty journal was necessary to further its academic interests. Hand surgery should
no longer be dependent on the major orthopedic and plastic surgery journals to extend
its educational mission.
